EUREKA News, the newsletter of EUREKA, the European network for market-oriented R&D, was viewed by its organisation as visually and editorially dull and far too introspective. Given its wide circulation (over 55,000 copies worldwide), the client wanted to re-launch it as a news and features magazine which would appeal to EUREKA’s stakeholders, potential partners/investors and the media. It needed to communicate EUREKA’s successes and vision.

A training course on ‘Communication for Development’ was organised by the RMSU in the framework of its function of technical assistance to the Euromed Heritage programme. The training, attended by 25 participants from nine countries, took place at the Université Hassan II – Mohammedia.
DG ECFIN communicates on the euro largely via its website, and by making brochures and expert speakers available in countries which aim to adopt it as their currency. However, DG ECFIN was concerned the euro and the role the European Commission plays in this area was not recognised in the schools’ curricula across Europe. Therefore, DG ECFIN hired Gellis Communications to advise them on the development and distribution of new products targeted at schools and the educational sector in general, to support existing schools curricula across the EU 27 Member States.
DG Employment required services to inform a new communications strategy for the PROGRESS programme, and contracted Gellis to undertake a Scoping Study on the communication and networking activities of PROGRESS since the launch of the programme. Gellis sought to identify the best options for the programme’s communications strategy taking account of current opportunities and needs and ensuring that all communications are relevant, coherent, effective, efficient and sustainable.
EURES, the European Employment Service, is a cooperation network between the European Commission and the Public Employment Services of the EEA Member States and other partner organisations. Activities were needed to raise awareness of the possibilities and benefits of job mobility in general and of the EURES network and its services in particular, among the general public across the European Union. A two-way information flow between the European Commission and the EURES network partners, as well as the extensive involvement of the EURES network was vital for the success of this project.
In 2005, it was perceived by stakeholders that the general public throughout Europe knew very little about the streamlined EU Social Protection / Social Inclusion process, and this lack of knowledge would affect its development. In light of this, the European Commission hired Gellis Communications to raise awareness of the role played by the European Union in the fields of Social Protection and Social Inclusion through the Open Method of Coordination.
Gellis was appointed to design and implement the Serbian government’s communication and image enhancement campaign, targeted towards Serbia’s membership of the EU. Consulting, strategic advice, media monitoring, the organisation of press conferences and trips, were some of the activities undertaken in order to shift the attention of the media and the public to focus on the concrete achievements of the Serbian government in terms of EU integration.
Gellis has worked with DG INFSO on a number of projects, creating editorial design and concept for various publications. The client decided that their prestigious annual publication, available both print and online, needed revisiting in order to ensure that the greatest possible breadth of research areas was featured, and that the graphic appeal, readability and user-friendliness of the publication was at peak.
DG Environment required services to turn their existing Green Public Procurement website into something more comprehensive and knowledge-based. Based on existing and new content, Gellis conducted a thorough website audit, developed a new user-friendly structure, and wrote and adapted content.
URBACT is an EU-funded programme aimed at facilitating the exchange of good practice in the field of urban development. The programme required a redesigned communications strategy with new, innovative means of promotion. In the context of a shift between two phases of the programme, Gellis carried out an evaluation of the communications strategy for phase one, and designed a seven-year communications plan for phase two.
The ERA is a European body aimed at helping create an integrated and competitive European railway area by improving safety, for all European citizens. In order to interact effectively with railway sector stakeholders, national authorities and European institutions, in needs to enhance its professional, trustworthy and credible image. In this context, Gellis provided services to the ERA to increase the visual and design coherence of the Agency’s products.
The EACI Marco Polo programme, aimed at shippers, transporters and logistic operators, is committed to finding a new, more sustainable way to transport goods across Europe. In order to be at maximum effectiveness, the communication strategy of the Marco Polo programme needed to be evaluated for strengths and weaknesses, and a new one designed exploring new opportunities for image enhancing and promotion.
The ECDC aims to help health authorities throughout EU and EEA countries raise awareness and limit the spread of infectious diseases and, in this context, developed two communication toolkits for Seasonal Influenza and Chikungunya Fever. To assess their usefulness and effectiveness, the ECDC contracted Gellis to conduct a scoping study, aimed at seeking intelligence from key stakeholders to feed into future communication activities.

The European Association of Communications Agencies (EACA) is a Brussels-based organisation whose mission is to represent full-service advertising and media agencies and agency associations in Europe. Every year, the EACA’s EFFIE Awards honour the most significant achievement in marketing communications: effectiveness. The EFFIEs recognise creative ideas and communications mediums that contribute to a brand's success. The EFFIEs are known by clients and agencies globally as the pre-eminent award in the industry and are presented in 33 countries worldwide. Gellis Communications was appointed for two years to help produce the EFFIES’s awards ceremony as well as write the Annual EFFIES awards catalogue.
IDAY is a network of European and African civil society organisations committed to improving education and access to education in Africa. As a new organisation with a need to promote its agenda to political and civic leaders, NGOs, media, education activists and the wider public, and for the International Day of the African Childhood event to be of wide interest, Gellis agreed to develop a communication strategy for IDAY on a pro-bono basis.
The EeSA is an umbrella organisation of industries and training providers working in partnership with public authorities and SMEs across Europe to promote ICT literacy and competence within European policy making. The organisation required services to raise awareness among target groups of the EeSA and members’ activities in support of an e-Skills agenda, promote EeSA initiatives in relation to key focus areas, and raise awareness of the EeSA and members’ activities in relation to EU e-Skills Week 2010. Gellis developed a multi-dimensional approach that combined a public affairs strategy with a PR approach.

In preparation for the Financial Times ‘Best of European Business Awards’, Gellis was contracted to provide services in background research and stakeholder analysis, including the identification of award selection criteria, the development of a survey aimed at 150 CEOs, and the organisation and management of a high-level dinner and awards ceremony.
The SBRA is an international non-profit organisation seeking to act as a bridge between business and research communities in Slovenia and EU institutions. They aim to keep members informed of European economic developments and trends in the research sphere, as well as support the interests of association members and also participate in promotional and educational activities to help prepare Slovenian business and research communities for EU membership. Gellis assists by providing strategic media advice, the organisation of conferences, and the writing, editing and production of a quarterly newsletter.
One of the largest independent private equity firms in Europe, Doughty Hanson required media management services when it acquired a majority of shares of a Belgium-based carpet manufacturer in 2004. Gellis has provided a full-service press office, including strategic advice, crisis management, press releases, and translation.
A leading Brussels-based think-tank for EU policy analysis, Friends of Europe’s goal is to stimulate new thinking on the future of Europe and widen the debate through increased participation of the media. Gellis has been contracted on a project-by-project basis to provide editorial and audiovisual services for Friends of Europe events.
